Overview of BioTrack New York (NY) Digital Tags

BioTrack’s New York portal for purchasing digital identification numbers (tags) used in the OCM seed-to-sale system is available at:
Tags can be purchased in quantities of 1,000, 5,000, or 10,000 for $0.10 per tag. However, please note that the site is not yet active (as of May 22, 2025)—it will only be functional once BioTrack’s NY API officially goes live for OCM. Unfortunately, that launch is still pending after several months of delays.
What Are Digital Tags?
These tags are 16-digit identifiers issued by the OCM and required for all inventory tracking activities, including plants, QA samples, lots, conversions, sublots, and more. Workflows like propagation, harvests, conversions, and QA testing will all require tags purchased through the BioTrack portal.
Example 1: Cultivator Workflow
Scenario: You’re a Cultivator planting 100 Sour Diesel plants.

100 tags needed for planting → $10.00

After harvest and curing, you generate:

15,000g of dry flower

5,000g of other material
-
5,000g of waste (no tag needed for destruction)

You need 3 digital tags for waste, dry flower, and other material → $0.30

You fulfill a processor order:

1,000g dry flower (1 sublot tag)

500g other material (1 sublot tag) → $0.20

Total cost: $10.50 for tagging activities from planting through sublotting.
Example 2: Processor Workflow
Scenario: You’re a Processor who purchased:

1,000g of dry flower

500g of other material
You use:

1,000g of dry flower to produce 955 pre-rolls → 1 tag → $0.10

5 pre-rolls for QA sample → 1 tag → $0.10
(QA results link to the parent batch and all sublots.)
You then sublot:

950 pre-rolls into 18 cases (50 per case) → 18 tags → $1.80
(Original batch serves as the 19th case.)
Total cost: $2.00
These examples highlight how quickly tag costs can add up throughout the production and sales process. Operators should plan and budget accordingly once the digital tagging system goes live.
